George M. B. Hawley papers, 1826-1942.

Notes, writings, correspondence, and clippings on the history of Geneva and western New York. Subjects include land speculators, city government, churches, women's organizations, Seneca Lake steamboats, Hobart College, public schools, and genealogy of prominent Geneva families. There are transcripts of minutes of Bank of Geneva, 1817-36; papers of the Ontario Glass Manufacturing Company; and early travellers' accounts and newspaper articles. Other items are a paper on kidnapping of blacks in Geneva in 1857; deed of First Universalist Society of Geneva, 1836; photos of Geneva harbor and steamboats; materials on Geneva Y.M.C.A.; map of Geneva sewer system, 1883; subject index to Geneva Palladium; index to photo albums compiled by Hawley; and notes on history of communities in Ontario, Seneca, and Wayne Counties. There are also scrapbooks on Hobart College, 1870-79, and on Geneva architecture, with annotations by Hawley.
